BMW Repair: door panel, interior door panel, door latch

hi Dean,  I have a 1987 L7. The drivers side door latch will not latch tight. It seems like a spring or somthing is broken because the latch flops back and forth, I also can't lock the door, the key won't turn in the lock.
How does the interior door panel come off and will I be able to see the lock from behind ?

There should be 2 screws in the arm rest and the door panel should pop away from the frame.  There might be a plastic cover over the lock actuator.  Remove the plastic shield and test the lock actuator and all the door latch and lock actions.  Please respond if need more understanding. Thanks!
