BMW Repair: 1994 BMW 318is Alternator, 1994 bmw 318is, bmw 318is

Question
Hi Paul.
Symptom: All the lights flicker (headlights, dash lights, all of them) most of the time. The lights don't turn on and off, they very in brightness. During these flickering episodes, the car ideas rough.
The rare times the lights are not flickering, the car runs great.

Diagnosis: Put a scope on the alternator, trace looks normal. After using the scope, the flickering went away for 2 weeks. Has since returned.

Voltage output varies between 14.5 volts and
15.5 volts.

Had the alternator check by two different "experts". Both say it is fine.

Removed the alternator belt and the flickering went away.

Replace the battery and the alternator ground cable.

Did a Internet search. A lot of people report the "light flickering" problem. No one has an answer.

I believe the voltage regulator is bad and the varying voltage is causing the flicker. But, a few others have replaced the alternator and report it did not fix the problem.

Do you have any ideas?
Thanks

Answer
it sounds like the alternator is bad. when the alternator was checked, did the experts put a load on it? this will give you a true indicator of the alternator condition. also 14.5-15.5v seems kind of high. have you experienced a lot of bulb failures lately?
