Alfa Romeo Repair: MSD 6AL on 91 164 TS..., lean mixture, tach adapter

Question
Dear Mr. Sokol,

Thank you so much for your kindly prompt and precise answer !

Indeed, my 164 2.0 Twin Sprak actually equipped with MAP sensor and 2 coils and distributors, I dare to assume that DIS-2 might not be suitable for her, however per your former precious answer, you mentioned Tach Adaptor might avoid swing or idling of Tachometer, per your respectable
experience, which are preferred among PN 8910 and 8920? And shall I
prepare 1 or 2 kits of Tach adaptor? MSD is quite popular to been seen
on JPN autos but almost none to be carried by adorable Italian orphans without dealers here in Taiwan...

Extremely appreciate your warm effort again !!

Best Regards

Dear Mr. Sokol,

I am quite interesting in putting MSD 6A or 6AL into my 164 2.0 TS, but also confused if I shoulprepare 2 sets of MSDs to connect with 2 coils seperatedly. Accoding to MSD official 6Ax installation instruction, upper part of Page 14 has shown the dual MSD ignition set up, but I am still worried about this kind of installation would result in another unexpectable problems like too heavy duty or lean burn on my rebuilt engine... Also, should I prepare some extra MSD equipments like sort of "Signal/ Current Enhancer" to prevent from possible idling tachometer or even non- startup? If this to be
positive and necessary, shall I prepare 2 sets also?

Thank you very much for your great effort always!!

Answer -
Page 14 does not apply to you situation. The 6AL is not appropriate (you already have a rev limiter in the ECU).

You could use 2 MSD 6-A and the tach adapter pn 8920.

Better would be pn 6212. The programmable DIS-2 ignition control. Check with msdigniton.com to see if you need the tach adapter with the 6212.

The MSD ignition supplies a better controlled spark, it cannot cause lean burn. Lean burn is a result of a lean mixture.

Put in a 180F thermostat.

I am in California and do not have access to your system.
If your fuel injection system uses a map sensor, let me know.

Answer
I thought with 2 coils you ment a distributorless system. With your system the DIS-2 does not apply.

Using 2 MSD 6-A would be the easiest way to go.  You will need one pn. 8920 to signel the ECU and the tach. One of the coils has more wires on the negative terminal, the extra wire(s) go to tach and ECU.

You should also change to a 180F thermostat and change your map sensor for MSD 2311 (unless you have a turbo or supercharger in which case use pn 2312).

IMPORTANT: do not use any aftermarket computer chips--this set up elimanates any need for those things.
