American Motors: 86 Jeep CJ7, jeep cj 7, jeep repair

Question
QUESTION: My '86 Jeep CJ 7 will start, but dies as soon as I release the key.  All to no avail,I have replaced the battery, solenoid, positive and negative battery cables, keyed ignition switch and the ignition switch operated by the keyed switch via a rod on the steering column.  It has an IL6 with auto trans.

ANSWER: Replace the ignition control module. If it doesn't have one, perform a voltage pin check at the ECU. You will have to find the pin locations using a Jeep repair manual or other manual. I do not have experience with post 79 Jeeps. Sorry

QUESTION: I replaced the module and still have the same problem.......  What else could it be?

Answer
The ignition switch (located at the base of the steering column) must be properly adjusted. It can create the condition you are experiencing. Try adjusting it.
Also, using a wiring diagram, check the starting circuit where the wiring runs to the solenoid, ignition switch and battery.
