American Motors: starting problem CJ7, starter solenoid, solenoid

Question
it's funny - someone asked you a question a while back...(27th June of this year) and I'm getting the exact same problems. Suddenly for no obvious reason Jeep won't start.
I can hear the solenoid click and then it shorts out.
To regain electrical power I have reconnect/connect the battery.
If I turn the key again all is well (power wise) - the seat belt noise starts and all circuits are working (lights etc) - but as soon as I push it to the starter solenoid clicks and it shorts out.

I know it's not the battery - that's very strong and almost new - I'm assuming it's shorting somewhere but don't know where...any ideas ?

Answer
Nick,
I would recommend replacing the starter solenoid and thouroughly clean all cabe ends. It's not that expensive and easy to do. Turn your headlights on, then try to start the engine. The headlights should dim VERY little. If they go out, you have excessive current draw, weak battery or corroded cables. If the lights don't flicker or change a bit, you have an open in the solenoid or its wiring.
Let me know if a solenoid doesn't fix it.
