American Motors: starter motor problem, starter motor, flywheel

Question
my starter motor disengages before the engine starts and make a funny noise when doing so

Answer
Paul,
You didn't say what kind of vehicle you have. It does sound, however, that the starter bendix drive is shot.
It is the part of the starter that engages the flywheel. You can replace the drive on some starters, others you must replace the complete starter assembly. It is possible that your flyweel might have some damaged teeth, also.
