American Motors: More voltage, Gen., light bulbs, system voltage

Question
Dear Kevin Pilotte:

I have a 1956 Hud. Metro. The Gen. puts out 12.5 to 12.9. My question, is there a way to inclrease the voltage to at least 13, 14 volts on it? Would be cool if they have a look-a-like alternator that looks like the original generator.

Any info would be grate.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Scott in Chico, Ca

Answer
Vehicles with generators have a external mechanical voltage regulator. Most regulators can be adjusted to change the charging system voltage. You would have to find the procedures in an old repair manual, but it can be done. It does require the use of a Voltmeter. I would be very careful when it comes to adjusting this, though. Too much output will blow light bulbs and overcharge the battery. Good luck.
