Audio Systems: Memorex, s video cable, yellow cable

Question
Hello Cleggsan,

I have a question regarding connecting my new dvd to my tv. Both dvd and tv are Memorex. I can't locate the manual for the tv, so I used the manual that came with the dvd player today.

I connected the left and right (white and orange) audio cables to the dvd and tv where they correspond by color. The yellow cable was plugged into the space called 'Video'. When I turn power on to the dvd and tv, only the power lights come on. The tv screen remains black and no sound.

On the tv, the section that these cables are plugged into is called 'A / V / S-Video Input'. On the tv, there is also a connection called 'S-Video', which requires a cable that I don't have right now.

Should there be an 'S-/Video' cable plugged in, in addition to the video cables already used?

I'm hoping this is all I need, or else I don't know why the tv and dvd are not working.

Answer
You don't need an S connection unless you want to. I recommend using composite connections.

DVD:  Three cables are needed:  Yellow, Red and White  (there is no orange).

From DVD OUT connect yellow cable from Video OUT to tv Video IN.

Same with Red and White.

The yellow cable carries the video.  The red and white carry the audio (Right and Left channels).

On the remote control for the tv press the video button to switch it over to tune into the video input (either 1 or 2, which ever one you are using).
