Audio Systems: Jensen CDH 1000 information please, laser diode, player mechanism

Question
I have a Jensen Model CDH 1000 which showed an EO4 error code. I understand that means the CD read device is not working. I'm aware it is an antique but I like the radio and would like to know where I can find the part to enable the cd to read my cd's. Can you direct me to a source? Thank You. Rita DeLay

Answer
Well, it is most likely the laser diode that has gone weak or way out of adjustment, which is the most common cause, but there are many other possibilities. It really needs testing and measurements to know for sure.  Assuming you did replace the optical pickup assembly which contains the laser diode inside it the installation requires a special alignment disc and tools to adjust it properly.  It requires an oscilloscope and voltmeter to set the "eye" pattern for best performance of the focus and bi-refringance setting, etc.  It is not easy and may very well cost more than just buying a new head unit.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but the CD player mechanism doesn't last forever; in some cars they will go a few months; some will go a few years, but they are in a harsh environment and subject to many conditions of temperature change, humidity and corrosion which shorten the life of the components.  Further, the laser diode comes from a semiconductor type of manufacturing operation where the yield is an important component of how long it will last when placed in service.

The replacement optical pickup assembly will have to come from Jensen as it must be the exact unit to fit your model. It is not a generic part that can be found elsewhere that I know of.

Wish I had better news to give you.
