Audio Systems: Recording to MP3, phono preamp, impedance mismatch

Question
Hi

I bought a cheap all in one hifi to convert my vinyl and cassettes to mp3 using audacity on my PC, but there is no line out socket on the hifi. Is it true I can use the headphone socket and will i need a special cable for this?

Thanks

Answer
I can't recommend doing that because the impedance mismatch will cause severe clipping and inaccuracy in any attempted transfer. You are better off going directly from the cassette player. As far as phono you can get a cheap phono preamp from Radio Shack.
