Audio Systems: car audio in home, car amp, watt amp

Question
hey,
i dont know who to really ask about this, haha, but any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. it has 2 deal with using a car amp as a home theater. i have a small 200 watt amp that i am trying to get to work as my TVs output, but i am having trouble getting the amp to turn on. i am trying to power it with a PSU that i scrapped from an old computer i found in storage. so far all i can get from the amp is the red light to come on. but it wont turn green, and i have no idea why. If you have any advice i would really appreciate it.

Answer
PSU units do not make good power supplies.

But, if it has sufficient output current on a sustained basis AND sufficient voltage stiffness it should do the job.

A 200 watt car amp will draw considerable current.  For example, if it were being driven to full output of 200W it would draw a current of at least 17amps.  To turn the amp on and make it power up you would need a current of substantial portions as well.

Also, check the wiring to make sure you have all three power connections properly made.  1) ground, 2) 12v steady, 3) remote turn on 12v.

Hope this helps.
