Audio Systems: replacement speakers, monsoon system, 4 ohms

Question
Hi Jerry,   my names Brian and I have a 2000 Buick Regal GSE with a monsoon radio system. Ive blown one rear deck speaker and received a price for replacement from dealer at about $250.00. I also spoke to techs at a local Circuit City store and they told me that i need a 3 ohm speaker to replace with, and i cant find what im looking for, they told me if i found what i needed they would install for about 40.00. Should I go back to dealer or are their other options?

Answer
You can replace the entire system at circuit city for that amount (290.00). Of COURSE they would install a speaker for 40.00.. wow  who wouldn't!  They install deck and 4 speakers for not much more than that.
You can get a good deck which plays MP3 on CD-R at CC for under 110.00.

I will tell you one thing tho, buying and using a speaker that is 4 ohms (instead of 3) MIGHT make one speaker louder than the other (being one ohm higher will not hurt the monsoon system amp). This difference in output would depend on the speakers' sensitivity and could be offset and corrected for due to that rating.

If you cannot afford the stock speaker, go buy a pair of 4 ohm Polks to replace it with. They have high efficiency and will sound great/last for years.
