Audio Systems: TV/DVD Audio Compatibility, pioneer dvd player, tv speakers

Question
Hi Garry,

I have a good and recent Pioneer DVD player running to a Samsung 27" CRT TV.  I am currently using the TV speakers (upgraded system pending) and notice a problem when playing DVDs.  The sound balance is horrible - when any sounds/music plays, it is extremely difficult to make out the voices.  The music overpowers the talking.  This is consistent fall all DVDs.  Any ideas where the problem lies?  Do I buy an equilizer, replace the DVD player, run through a stereo for audio?

Thank-you for any help you may be able to provide.

Henry

Answer
my first thought is that there's a problem with the audio output level section of the dvd player. i'd hook it up to another tv or stereo to verify whether it's the dvd player, or the audio in portion of the tv. if the dvd seems fine hooked up to something else, (you don't even need to hook up the video jacks when trying a substitute, so you can hook up dvd's audio out jacks to anything with inputs just to verify)then the tv's input circuit is at fault, and just upgrade your system a little earlier than expected. also, pioneer and onkyo make quite good surround receivers with plenty of hookup configs possible.
