Audio Systems: stereo receiver, 8 ohm speakers, amplifer

Question
I bought a Sherwood RX-4105 receiver and 2 pair of Pioneer 8ohm speakers (they are mounted to the wall in my office)- the receiver has options for speaker A, B, or A&B.  I only get sound out of the speakers on the side marked "left" for A and B.  It is not the speakers - they all work.  The stereo manual suggested "for safe amplifier operation" to use 16 ohm speakers when using 4 speakers, i.e. the A and B terminals.  Could this be the problem?  I really don;t want to unmount the speakers and buy new ones.  I already exchanged the receiver, but I have the same problem with the second one.  I really love the sound, especially for the price.  Any suggestions?  I thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
Eric,

Tell me, when you use only the A or the B speakers, does a channel still fail? Shouldn't. Should only happen when you use *both* the A and B speakers at the same time.

When the manual suggests using 16-ohm speakers if you want to use the A and B speakers at the same time, that means that you're showing the receiver's amplifier an 8-ohm (more or less) load. When you use two sets of 8-ohm speakers, you're showing the amplifer a 4-ohm (more or less) load, which my guess is the receiver's not designed to handle. It compensates by shutting down a channel.

The facts you've presented support this: all the speakers work; two successive versions of the same receiver exhibit the identical reaction to two pairs of 8 ohm speakers.

Either you have to find new speakers--good luck BTW finding 16-ohm speakers, get a different receiver, or stop using both sets of speakers at the same time.

Sherwood has a pretty good web site: www.sherwoodusa.com. You might want to contact them directly for further guidance.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
