Audio Systems: Speakers popping when I turn receiver off, cerwin vega clsc, jerry dear

Question
Kevin
I recently purchased a used NAD 7155 hame audio receiver, everything works great except for the fact that when I turn the receiver off the woofer surges and makes small popping noise. The speaker is a brand new Cerwin Vega CLSC-15. It also does it when I tried hooking it up to the B set terminals on the back of the receiver. Is there an easy fix to this? Or is this something that will probably cost a pretty penny? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Jerry

Answer
Dear Jerry,

One of the problems with vintage gear is that they sometimes exhibit strange performance artifacts, like discharging a wee bit o' electronic pressure when powering down--which exhibits itself with a small "foont" out of the subwoofer in your speakers. The bad news is that sometimes the noise is just, plain annoying. The good news is that it's not harming your speakers at all. So, if you can live with it, ignore it.

I once reviewed an amplifier from one of the smaller audiophile companies, which emitted a series of loud chirps (there's no other way to describe it), like a chorus of oversized robins, when you shut it down. There was no way around it. In the review I called it the "rhapsody of alien afterbirth", which of course the editor promptly blue-penciled into oblivion. Point is: the chirps were annoying beyond measure, but they didn't hurt either the performance of the amplifier or the speakers.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,

Kevin
