Audio Systems: IM Back LCD?, cable tv hookup, microwave ovens

Question
Hi Kevin, wanted to let you know I picked up the unit on Wed. and am waiting for the HD Box form Time Warner now.  We were able to connect DVD player to it and see the image just fine.
I tell ya Kevin, the terminologoy and hookup looks a lot different than the ole vcr/cable/tv hookup for sure.

Do I need any cables other than the standard stuff that comes with old vcr's, etc?  The unit opted for the SVideo connect with the DVD player.

Of course now the next thing is a sound system.  Am I right in saying that some speakers out there appear to be wireless?  There are infra red connectors in back of unit, are these for wireless?

tks

bill

PS AKAI isn't vrey good so far at anwering phones or calling customers back at all, am let down to date!

Answer
Dear Bill,

Take a deep breath and repeat after me: "I will read the manual. I will read the manual. I will read the manual."

Read the manual.

The manual will tell you what connections are available with the unit and what connectors (called "interconnects") are included with the set. If you want an alternate connection for which the interconnect is not provided, then you have to go out and buy it. S-video is a good choice. A better choice is component video; the best choice is HDMI. In the end, the choice is yours. Try different ones and see which works best for you.

As far the rest of your set-up is concerned, I don't know what else you have (receiver, speakers, VCR, etc.), so it's not possible to guess what kinds of connections would be desirable or optimal.

I do not recommend wireless speakers. The technology has limited bandwidth, and they are prone to interference from other, wireless sources: cell phones, microwave ovens, cordless phones, and so on. The infrared connectors on the back of the TV are most likely for remote control devices. Again, there's no substitute for reading the manual. It will say what they're for and how to use them.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
