Audio Systems: sub speakers pop loudly, power amp, power wires

Question
i have an amp, elect.xover and subs.when i turn the radio off, with key or power switch, the sub spkrs pop very loudly.i'm certain that my power wires are big enough.only a 30x2 amp and overkill wires.i have changed amps, head units, xovers, speaker polarities, spkr grounds, input polarity, and even pulled a ground from the batt.this is the only install i've ever had with this problem(my own).been living with it for 8+years . will try any fix.thnx.

Answer

Outside of equipment problems (some amps just have a loud turn on thump), the obvious solution (9 out of 10 times) is that the crossover and/or amp levels are simply set too high.
The amps/crossover levels (called the system 'gain') are the most overlooked and poorly setup part of most systems. Interestingly enough, gain is the most important part of the setup.
There are some ways to get 'around' the thump. But they are not a 'fix' like the gains are.

Without getting too involved, Tune the gains to the weakest link (usualy the mids/highs).

Average scenario:
Most people setup the sub amps' output 1st, then they live with whatever the mids and highs will do in relation to their power amp. Nothing could be a worse idea for accuracy or for NOISE's sake!
With the head unit volume at 90%, the bass and treble centered, and the loudness and any other boosts off:
Tune the mids and highs 1st, then bring up the subs to match them.
I cannot tell you much more specifics without knowing the amp and crossover models (and oh yes...could I tell you more with that info). :)

Worst case scenaio:
If this does not help you may have to run a switch to the amp(s) so that you can turn it (or them) on before the head unit is powered.

If you had given me some manufacturers/model names, I might be able to help you lots more as to your choice of gear and its limits.

You changed speaker grounds?   for gods sake why? All they do is report what is hitting them via the sound you hear.
And how excatly did you change input polarity  (perhaps a crossover switch)?   (which wont help, btw)
Pulled a gorund from the battery?  humm
If you are using anything but RCA's to get to the the crossovers and amps.. Get some RCA's.

*Keep the ground wires as large of a diameter as you can Afford/Use (and as short as possible).

These oughta get you going in the correct direction.
