Audio Systems: Electrical noises on car radio, toyota vienta, electrical noises

Question
I live in Melbourne Australia where we have an extensive tram system. REcently the antenna on my car radio in a toyota vienta broke and sinc ethen after changing the antenna, i have lood hisiing noises whenever i go along tram lines that have trams running and stoppping. It only happens on the am band making the car radio unlistenable. I ave been to a few installers who say that there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Help please. Joe

Answer
You may have purchased a lemon.
This one would at least suggest trying a different antenna (if not trying an entirely different make/model of antenna).
Simply put, if the stereo did NOT have this problem before the antenna was replaced, then it can very likely be corrected.
With no doubt, not all antennas are created equal.
Also, just because one is expensive is no real indicator of its performance in your particular vehicle.

Good luck and thanks for the question.

**PS
You may want to have a shop see if that radio has what is called an 'antenna trimmer'. This is esp for fine tuning  the AM and is on many units usually located inside deck.
