hi,
i bought a 98 toyota with a auto reverse tape deck, which by looks of it ( peering in ) appears to have never been used. when i tried my first tape, it played fast in both directions. after using some tape cleaner it runs fine in one direction, fast in the other. any suggestion for a cure ? what might cause this ?

Answer -
Mark,
If you sprayed anything into the tape deck, the deck will need to be disassembled and cleaned out! One of the main causes of a tape running fast can be due to the pinch rollers not engaging the capstan posts completely. I find this to be due to the grease on the slide plates that hold the pinch rollers will dry up or harden because of lack of use.

Answer
Mark,
About the best way to see what the problem is would be to power the stereo up on a work bench and load a tape to SEE what is going on. It may still be that one of the pinch rollers isn't going all the way in to contact the capstan post due to something binding up.
