Audio Systems: 96 Maxima stereo quit working, nissan maxima, single cd player

Question
Hello-
The Bose stereo (has single CD player and tape deck) in my 1996
Nissan Maxima just quit working. It was working when I drove to
work yesterday morning, but when I left the office, I got in the
car, started it up and noticed the stereo was off. I tried to turn it
on, but it just doesn't work.
I believe it's receiving power as the front illuminates when the
headlights are on.
I checked the fuses for the radio, they look good. I did not check
all of the fuses in the box though, just the ones labeled "Bose"
(15 AMP) and "stereo or maybe it's audio" (10 amp).
Everything about the stereo, i.e. CD player, channels, etc. were
working fine before this.
I was going to remove the stereo to see if there is a fuse inside,
but can't see a way that it comes out. It's flush mounted so I
don't see how it comes out.
Lastly, if I have to have it fixed, should I go to a Nissan dealer or
a car audio place? Considering the age of the car, I don't want to
spend too much.
I hope this is enough info.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Jeff,
First of all, if your take the vehicle to the local dealer for repair of the stereo they will only send the stereo out for repair and charge quite a bit more for doing so. Most stereos will have two power sources, one hot(12 volts)at all times and one source switced with the key on. You may want to try using a 12 volt test lamp to check for both sources to the stereo. There are no fuses inside the stereo, but you may see one inserted into the rear of the stereo next to the connector. On many vehicles you may see hidden screws inside the AC vents above the stereo or you could find screws inside the ash tray that hold the bottom of the trim panel onto the dash. The trim may also snap/pull away from the dash. If you are not sure you may want to call your dealer and ask someone in service how to remove the trim.
