Audi Repair: 1996 Audi A6 Quattro Avant, power door locks, mileage indicator

Question
QUESTION: Hi there, I just acquired a used 1996 Audi A6 Quattro wagon but their are a few issues. # 1: None of the power door locks function when I press the button. I can hear the motor operating but nothing happens. #2: All of the dash gauges illuminate except for the small square mileage indicator one. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

ANSWER: Hi,  The power door locks work on a vacuum principle, so if none of the doors unlock or lock, I suspect a vacuum connector has perforated or come undone.  Common areas would be in the door hinge area, or near the pump itself.  The illumination in the gauge cluster can typically be repaired by taking the cluster out and replacing the broken bulb from the back of the cluster.  These bulbs are fairly small and have a plastic clip on them with two small metal contact prongs.  You will have to get these from an automotive supplier or a dealer.  Let me know how you get on,  Jan

QUESTION: Can you please tell me where the central locking pump is located on the 1996
Audi A6 Avant? Also, do you know the part number?

Answer
Normally the central locking pump is located above or around the fuel filler inside of the rear luggage department.  I am sorry I do not have the part number for it.  It is normally enclosed in a large piece of foam.  When you activate the lock while looking around in there (have to remove a piece of interior trim) you can normally hear it.
