Cadillac Repair: Whine from engine bay that is tied to engine speed, power steering fluid, power steering pump

Question
QUESTION: There is a whine from theengine bay(quite loud) that speeds up with the engine speed. The power steering fluid has been flushed, trans lines replaced and the serpentine belt looks ok. All this on a 1992 Deville with a 4.9 litre. Any ideas?

ANSWER: Most likely the power steering pump or the IDLER or the belt tensioner.

Did you try and spray some belt dressing on the belt ?.

QUESTION: I always thought that belt dressing was a poor idea-that it kind of gummed things up... but I could try that.I'll let you know.

Thanks

Answer
HORSE HOCKEY. Just spray a little bit on the belt to see if the noise stops. If it does, replace the belt and keep the old belt in the trunk as an emergency spare.

Because the belt always breaks when your hundreds of miles from home on a Friday night in the middle of a rian storm when nobody is open or they can't get a belt until tomorrow. You can always put the old belt back ON to get you home.
