Cadillac Repair: service advise, google search, bmw shop

Question
hello I see from your profile that you have extensive experience at a gm dealership. I am trying to find out some information about the job of service advisor. Is this a well paying job and what is the average salary? thank you for your help

Answer
Hi Rommel,

I'm not really going to be able give you much to go on here with your questions. When I worked as a writer back in '89 for 5 months the base pay was $250 per week plus $1 for every hour of sold work. So if the techs made 200 hours that week my paycheck before taxes was $450 per week or $23,400 for the year.

However in doing a Google search for "automotive service writer" I came across a help wanted that said the average at that shop was $3,000 per month or $36K. At the BMW shop in Naperville, IL. they paid between $45-60K.

What it really comes down to is how well you can sell the work and how your payplan is structured. If you go to your public library they should have a book that gives job descriptions, education required for the position and a salary range. Just ask at the reference desk.

Hopefully I have been of some help. Bill
