Cadillac Repair: 1991 cadillac /ECM, torque converter clutch, coolant temperature sensor

Question
my 91 Cadillac 4.9 have this code keep coming up E39 and E52 can you help me fix this please

Answer
Hi John,

What you need to do is to clear the codes and see which ones come back. The E39 has to do with the viscus converter clutch or what used to be called torque converter clutch. and the E52 means the battery was disconnected or the engine computor lost power.

In order to clear the codes push and hold the off and warmer buttons on the climate control panel with the key on or the engine running. The fuel data panel will start to display codes after aprox. 3 seconds and then the buttons can be released. When it reaches 70 push off and hi fan until the display shows E00 and the codes will be cleared. Turn the key off and the next time the key is turned on the dash will be back to normal. Then the next time the service engine light turns on go back into diagnostics and read the codes. A single E means a history code and EE with a number means the problem is happening now.

If the E39 returns there really isn't a common fix because it could be a problem with the torque converter, the solinoid, wireing or connector, a valve inside the trans not moveing, a computor problem or even a coolant temperature sensor problem.

The E52 could be a computor problem but most times it is due to the battery being disconnected and then the code not cleared after the battery has been reconnected. There is an outside chance that a bad engine computor might cause both codes but without testing I would say that is vey unlikely.

To propperly diagnos those codes a shop manual would need to be followed and tests done to determine what exactly the problem is. So that is something you or your mechanic would need to do at your end. Sorry I can't be anymore help than that. Bill
