I hope you can help me. I have a 1987 caddy fleetwood brougham limo by malony coatchworks 5.0 carburated motor. The alternator wont charge tried 4 alt. changed battery changed connectors had alt. tested. charge light is working as it is supposed to. wires all look fine. fuses all test good it is if something is not letting the alt. charge at more than 8-11.5 volts I have tried grounding the alt to the body to rule out a bad ground. could this be the bcm or ecm even though I am not showing them on the charging systems diagrams that I have?   I am about to dump gas on it and light a match thanks marty connors

Always use a volt meter when testing fuses and alternator circuits because a backfeed to a burnt out fuse can give you a false positive if you use a test light.

Yes, The ECM is part of the charging system.

Is the charge light ON with the ignition OFF ?.

Is the charge light illuminated when you turn the ignition to the ON position ONLY without starting the engine ?.

Does the charge lamp go OUT when the engine is started ?.

Do you have battery voltage to the "S" terminal at the alternator ?.

Physically remove and check fuse # 3 (20 amp) and fuse # 7 (20 amp) in the fuse panel.

I can provide full factory electrical and diagnostic procedures if you need them.

Answer
What you need is an electrical schematic and the diagnostic procedures from the factory service manual. Contact me at: onlineautohelp@msn.com

1. You either have an open circuit within the "L" (brown wire to fuse # 7 which could be in your dash connections.

2. A faulty ECM and or faulty wiring to the ecm.
