Hi Ed,

My car was running great with 165,000 miles on it until about 6 month ago. Then it just died while
driving. I had it towed to a Pittsburgh repair shop. It took them a few days to fix (replace coil). Then they blow out the computer, they said.
They replaced computer & I had it back a 1/2 dozen times since. The service engine light they cannot reset, they claim. It runs rough, especially when temperature changes. I have tried to adjust timing my self to correct. It will run ok for a while then the same thing. It only gets 11.5 miles
to a gallon of gas now. Please help!
Thanks

Hi,Joe

If you can get me the codes that the ECM is setting ill see what is going on with your rough run condition,to get the codes do as follows:press the off and warmer buttons at the same time on the climate control, watch the fuel data center,it will begin to give you the codes, send them to me and ill see what i can do to diagnose. Thanks

Answer
OK Joe

Good job on the codes,E30-is ISC out of range, this is a Idle speed control motor that is either not adjusted correctly or is binding causing high idle speeds,it either needs to be replaced or adjusted,if it is to be adjusted then it needs to be done paying strict attention to the service manual, also when it is adjusted the Throttle position sensor needs to be adjusted to .55volts at min idle.
The E41-is a cam sensor signal fault, this is located in the distributor, usually its a hard failure and the sensor needs to be replaced.
The E91-is that the transmission range switch is out of range, this can be fixed by adjusting the Park/neutral switch,or it indicates a failure of the switch, usually its just out of adjustment.
The E98-is idle speed is out of range, this is caused by the ISC motor not properly set causing high idle speeds, this code will be there if you have the E30 code for failed ISC.
The E52 is ECM memory reset, normal code if the battery is disconnected.
The E53,is the distributor interrupt signal, caused by either a failing ign module,or the set timing connector was jumper to set the ign timing.
The codes that will flag the lamp on are the E30,E41,E53,E91,E98.
I would try to repair your high idle speed problem first, then replace the cam sensor, then try to adjust the park/Neutral switch, the ISC problem is a bit more involved,i can guide you through that if needed, let me know.
