Cadillac Repair: Anti- theft , enabled, cadillac seville, ohmeter

Question
Sometimes when I try to start my car it won't start. On the driver info screen it says "Anti- theft enabled remove key, wait three minutes and try again". What is it I can do to fix this? The problem is becoming more frequent.

1989 cadillac seville.

Answer
Hi David, Try the other key and see if it works better. If so then clean the first key pellet with rubbing alcohol or mild cleaner. If no change then you will have 2 choices...replace the ignition lock cylinder and keys or measure the resistance of the key pellet with a digital ohmeter and at the bottom of the steering column where all the wires come down there will be a 2 wire connector with 2 small/20 gage white wires. Cut the wires on the column side and install the resistor that you get from Radio Shack to the cut wires and then the car will start every time. The drawback is the car can be started without a special key now but you will save $100 or more repairing it yourself this way. What happens is there are 2 small wires that come off the cylinder and one breaks in half and then the problems with starting occur. Hope that helps. Bill
