Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Blazer, spark plug wires, chevy blazer

Question
QUESTION: Hey this is frank from about a week ago with the 1995 chevy blazer. You suggested that i try to remove the egr valve and just bolt on a flat piece of metal. I did that and it seemed to run better but still not 100% Im just wondering where i should go from here. I also noticed that once i get the rpms above like 2500 it runs smooth. After 2500 rpms it doesnt hesitate, doesnt bog down and it runs very smooth Idk if that helps narrow it down any but i need to get this thing running asap im gonna be moving here in a couple days and need my truck to help
Thanks,
Frank

ANSWER: HI FRANK,SO IF IAM READING THIS CORRECT IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE MAYBE A ENGINE SKIP, RUNS ROUGH UNDER 2500 RPM !!!IF YOU START THIS UP PUT IT IN GEAR [DRIVE] PUT ONE FOOT ON THE GAS AND THE OTHER ON THE BRAKE [BRAKE STAND] AND RAISE THE IDLE TO ABOUT 12OO RPM'S IF THE ENGINE RUNS SMOOTH LIKE THIS THEN WE CAN RULE OUT A SKIP, MISFIRE OF A CYLINDER. BUT IF YOU NOTICE A SKIP [MISFIRE] YOU MAY HAVE A BAD SPARK PLUG,IGN WIRE,DIST CAP,PLUGGED FUEL INJ,BAD VALVE, WHAT EVER..SO IF YOU FIND YOU HAVE A SKIP THE NEXT MOVE IS TO FIND OUT WHICH CYLINDER IT IS..YOU WILL NEED 2 PEOPLE FOR THIS NEXT TEST,I WANT YOU TO DO THE SAME THING A TOLD YOU TO DO ABOVE BUT THE I WANT ONE PERSON UNDER THE HOOD REMOVING ONE SPRAK PLUG WIRE AT A TIME FROM THE DIST CAP AND WHEN THERE IS NO CHANGE IN THE ENG SKIP, OR RPM YOU FOUND THE CYLINDER THAT IS NOT FIRING. NOW YOU HAVE TO DAIGNOSE WHY IT IS NOT FIRING,CK THE PLUG,CK THE WIRE,CK THE DIST CAP AND INJ..THIS SHOULD KEEP YOU BUSY FOR A BIT,LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES AND GET BACK TO ME FOR MORE INFO,,TOM..

QUESTION: I did this test and sure enough I had a misfire in #1 and #3 cylinders...I had the spark plug wires mixed up and I switched them around and now it idles fairly well. The only thing I question now is why it is blowing white/blue smoke? It used to only blow smoke when it started and that was only a little bit but now every time I step on the gas it blows huge clouds of white smoke. Could the white smoke be from not having the EGR valve on it? I took it off and just bolted a flat piece of metal to the block to make it run. Will not having the EGR valve on it cause any damage to the motor? I am almost done chasing this problem but I was worried about the smoke.
Thanks
Frank

ANSWER: HI FRANK,THE WHITE SMOKE WOULD NOT BE FROM THE EGR VALVE NOT BEING ATTATCHED. EGR VALVE COOLS THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND BETTER BURNING OF FUEL TO REDUCE EMISSIONS. IF YOU LEAVE THIS OFF YOUR CAR WILL MORE THEN LIKELY FAIL ITS STATE INSP..ALSO WITHOUT THIS VALVE YOU MAY GET PINGING FROM THE ENGINE UNDER A HEAVY LOAD [ENGINE KNOCK]..BUT THE WHITE SMOKE SCARES ME. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS,USUALLY WHITE SMOKE IS FROM 1 OF 2 THINGS. TRANSMISSION OIL LEAKING INTO THE CUMBUSTION CHAMBER OR COOLANT. MOST COMMON IS COOLANT LEAKING AT THE HEADGASKET AREA'S. SINCE THIS CAR DOES NOT USE A MODUALATOR VALVE FOR THE TRANSMISSION WE CAN RULE THAT OUT..HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR COOLANT LEVEL LATELY ?? PLEASE DO SO AND KEEP A EYE ON IT..TOP IT OFF AND KEEP THE RAD CAP TIGHTENED 1/2 WAY SO THE RADIATOR WILL NOT BUILD UP AS MUCH PRESSURE AS IT IS DESIGNED TO. THIS MAY KEEP THE COOLANT FROM GETTING INTO THE CYLINDERS..BUT SOONER OR LATER THIS WILL NEED TO GET REPAIRED,YOU DO NOT WANT COOLANT GETTING INSIDE THE ENGINE THIS MAY CAUSE HYDRO LOCK IF THE LEAKS GETS REAL BAD..HYDRO LOCK IS WHEN COOLANT GETS INTO THE CYLINDER WALLS AND LOCKS THE ENGINE UP. [LIQUID WILL NOT COMPRESS] THIS MAY CAUSE A ROD TO BEND..TO REMOVE THE COOLANT IN THE ENG IF THIS DOES OCCUR YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THE SPARK PLUGS AND CRANK THE ENG OVER TO REMOVE THE COOLANT IF THIS HAPPENS..BUT THIS WILL NEED TO GET REAL BAD BEFORE THIS DOES HAPPEN...THIS WILL ALSO CAUSE A ENG MISFIRE BECAUSE IT WILL FOUL SPARK PLUGS AS WELL..THIS MAY ACCOUNT FOR THE MINOR SKIP IN THE ENG THAT YOU HAVE..IF THIS IS WHITE SMOKE FROM THE EXHAUST IT SHOULD SMELL KINDA SWEET..LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES, GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,TOM

QUESTION: Actually I just topped off the fluid in the radiator today. It wasn't low I just filled the reservoir the rest of the way from when I replaced the radiator. The exhaust smells real bad of gas but there isn't a sweet smell to it at all. Could the white smoke be the gas burning that got into the oil when the 3rd cylinder's injector dumped a ton of gs into it? I'm going to take it to school tomorrow and hook up the tech 2 to it and see what dtc's I will get. What else could be causing the white smoke? The engine oil is a good clear color and looks to be fine. It does however smell of gas pretty bad.
Thanks
Frank

Answer
HI FRANK,WELL IF THERE IS ALOT OF GAS MIXED WITH THE OIL YOU HAVE GOT TO CHANGE THE OIL.IF NOT IT WILL WASH DOWN THE CYLINDER WALLS WITH GAS AND THIS WILL CAUSE THE ENG TO FLOOD OUT..IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THERE IS SO MUCH GAS MIXED WITH THE OIL IT MAY LOOK LIKE COOLANT FROM THE EXH BUT IT IS MIXED WITH OIL AND GAS...IS THE OIL LEVEL OVER FILLED..IF SO IT IS MORE THEN OVERFILLED WITH FUEL. YOU NEED TO GET THIS OUT OF THE OIL..THIS WILL ALSO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO MISFIRE BECAUSE IT WILL ALSO FOUL THE SPARK PLUGS, AND MAKE THE ENG RUN ROUGH..THIS MAYBE YOUR PROBLEM..LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES FOR YOU...GOOD LUCK,,,TOM...
