Chevrolet Repair: hdyrulic clutch 89 chevy v3500, clutch master cylinder, negative battery cable

Question
what is the length of  travel for the slave cyl. in my clutch set up ? I can not get my system bled and am thinking maybe the hose / tube assembly is bad.

Answer
Try bleeding this way:

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM BLEEDING
1988-95 Models

Fill the clutch master cylinder with the proper grade and type fluid. Raise and support the vehicle safely.

Remove the slave cylinder retaining bolts. Hold the cylinder at about 45° angle with the bleeder at the highest point.

Have and assistant fully depress the clutch pedal. Open the bleeder screw.

Repeat until all air is expelled from the system.

Be sure that the fluid level remains full in the clutch master cylinder throughout the bleeding procedure.

Install the slave cylinder.

If this does not work, could be a bad master cylinder.

Master Cylinder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the lower steering column covers.
Remove the lower left side air conditioning duct, if so equipped.
Disconnect the pushrod from the clutch pedal.
Disconnect the reservoir hose.
Disconnect the secondary cylinder hydraulic line to the master cylinder.
Unfasten the master cylinder retaining nuts and remove the master cylinder.
To install, using a new gasket, reverse the removal procedure. After installation, bleed the clutch system.

Could also be a bad clutch hose assembly.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1988-95 Models

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Raise the vehicle and support it safely.

Disconnect the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder.

Disconnect the hydraulic line from the master cylinder.

If necessary on 1988-91 R/V models, remove the nut retaining the hydraulic line and the speedometer cable to the cowl, then install the nut to hold the speedometer cable in place.

Cover all hydraulic lines to prevent dirt and moisture from entering the system.

Remove the bolts securing the cylinder and remove it from the transmission.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the cylinder retainer to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.

I would tend to suspect the master cylinder if bleeding is a problem.  I would try rebleeding first.  Then the master cylinder.  Last the hose assembly.

Hope this helps.
