Chevrolet Repair: 99 Chev Suburban 1500 5.7 V8 (Idle and popping problem), foot on the gas, compression test

Question
Not had any problems from the Suburban until recently. I was headed home and while I was at a stop sign, the Suburban started to shake, then the idle got bad almost like it was going to die. Then it started making a popping noise out of the exhaust. Not a backfire but popping. If I kept my foot on the gas and break, the idle was better but the popping was worse. I made it home by the grace of God. My husband changed the plugs and wires but it didn't make a difference. My husband is all out of ideas. Can you give me some ideas of what I should check for?

Answer
Hey Dee,

First thing is first and do a compression test and make sure it is even across the board.  A popping from the exhaust could be an exhaust valve not seating properly.  Doing a compression test will eliminate all of the mechanical components and then we can think about the engine management electronics.
