Chevrolet Repair: Engine dies, ground cable, hydrometer

Question
95 sub.  engine just quites. I checked the Fuse link to the starter cyl. all fuse relays.  It won't crank over and everything still has power.  The fuel pump won't even kick on w/ the key in the run position.  What else could it be?

Answer
Hey Pat

Even though you have enough power to run all of the accessories and lights it may not have enough reserve amperage to turn the engine over.  The complete electrical system does not draw 1/10th of what the starter needs to use.  I would start by having the battery checked with a load tester.  If there are caps on the top you can purchase a hydrometer from a parts store and check the state of charge.  This won't tell you the condition of the battery but it will give you an idea if the alternator is not charging it properly when the vehicle was running.
If it is ok make sure to check the ground cable that goes from the battery to the engine block and over to the frame.
