Chevrolet Repair: 88 chevy 1500 5.7, fuel pressure regulator, chevy 1500

Question
QUESTION: My 5.7 will only start if I throw starting fluid in it.  I changed the temp sensor on it and it fired up great for about a day.  Now it will only start if I throw starting fluid in it(I'm sure its not good to keep doing that).  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi Pedro... well i would start by looking at the fuel system...do you have fuel pressure when you turn on the key. if the pump doesn't run for 3 seconds when turning the key on,  check the relay. if relay good check the oil pressure sensor. if thats ok check for power at the fuel pump. also check for a ground...if you have power and ground then check for a bad pump. a quick check on the pump would be to put 12 volts to the fuel pump bypass wire. should be a single wire with female connector somewhere around the brake booster. if pump runs using that wire then you have a problem in  the circut...because it starts when using start fluid i would suspect the relay....hope this helps

QUESTION: I do have power and fuel.  I have an inline pump on underneath with about 14 lbs of pressure.  The old one went bad.  So fuel is not a problem once it is running.  I should have mentioned that earlier.  I will check the oil pressure sensor on it.  Any other suggestions would be a huge help.  Thanks again for your time.

Answer
Hi Pedro.... check the fuel pressure regulator as well. also look down TBI and see if you have fuel spray on crank. if not then check for a plugged fuel filter or problem in the fuel line...also i take it that the pump in the tank is bad....thats why you have an inline pump now...is it on the right fuel line. also check to see that you are picking up fuel right away. if you are trying to pull fuel thru the old pump it could be delayed. i would recommed going back to the proper fuel pump in the tank... hope this helps
