Chevrolet Repair: Help!, high gears, low gears

Question
Hello Mark! I have a 1963 chevy pickup with a 327 engine & 2 speed powerglide transmission. I just bought a circle track valve body for my Transmission and I would like to know if I need a stall torque converter with it because when I'm on the road and going 70 miles per hour the rpm's go around 3000's is that normal? also when I'm taking off it's very slow to take off, but once I'm gaining speed the truck drives just fine and eats alot of gas, is it because of the gears in my rear end.  I was told That I might have low gears in my rear end but I can't tell If I have low or high gears, If you can help my please I would appreciate you. Thanks! Gerardo

Answer
Hi Gerardo, If your driving this truck on the road you really don't want to have a high stall converter. It sounds like you must have like 4.56 or 4.88 gears which is good for around town. Install the valve body and see how it runs.

With a high stall converter the engine rpm's go to  the stall speed that you bought. So if you had a 3000 rpm stall converter you can hold the brake and step on the gas and the tires won't start to spin until you get to around 3000 rpms on the tach. This great for drag strips so you can get into your torque when you leave the line.

Hope  this helps
