Chevrolet Repair: Speed Sensor/Seedometer Cluster, vehicle speed sensor, gm bulletins

Question
can you tell me where the speed sensor is located on a 2005
Cavalier? The MPH indicator is not working on the speedometer cluster but
everything else is. Does the speed sensor control the MPH? I really would
appreciate your help. The dealership said it would cost $500.00 to
replace the cluster.

Answer
If the dealer diagnosed it as needing a replacement cluster...it will probably need one. Or did they just shoot you a price of one without diagnosing it.

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located in the transaxle. It send the speed signal to the PCM and then to the cluster.
Check the wiring and connector at the VSS or if you want to guesstimate you try and replace the VSS. I do not have access to Cavalier buletins...there may be one thou.
Do you have a scanner? Can you get MPH on the scanner?
Go to Autozone.com and you can get titles of GM bulletins but not the repair info.

Also, if the odometer is working then the signal is getting to the cluster and the speedometer is most likely defective.

Hope the helps,
Robert
