Chevrolet Repair: 1988 Suburban Transfer case?, shift linkage, barrings

Question
Hello Van,
This is what I've got, my transfer case went bad in the burb and when they took it apart found one of the barrings was torn up. We got lucky and found a new (used) one that matched and put that in. Everything was great, was test driving the Burb for about 1 hour or so then all of the sudden I was going down a hill and I lost power to the wheels. Was running just fine but wouldn't move. Tried 4wheel drive and nothing, (well 4high only) when I went to put it in park the tranny started to grind. I can feel the tranny go into gear, but no drive. Just a bad transfer case maybe? Have not had a chance to get it back on the lift to have a look but just wanted some idea's before hand.

Sorry for the long question, and THANKS for any help!!
Gary

Oh it a 350 auto

Answer
I'd check the shift linkage, although trying 4X4 low would be my first try.
I don't know what transfer case you have, so look at the front driveshaft to see if it is turning.
If your transfer case has a differential inside, and the front axle actuator isn't working, that front driveshaft could be the only thing being driven.

Make sure both linkages on the right side of the transfer case shifter are working correctly.
