-----Question-----
Hi.
i own a 96 z28 camaro with about 149,000 miles on it. i have owned it
about 6 months and since i got it it has had low oil pressure. a little
while ago my engine developed a tick that is consistant with the
engine speed. i have been told that it could be the hydraulic valve
lifters sticking due to lack of oil flow to them. any suggestions for fixing
the low oil pressure or the tick in my engine. also the tick gets REALLY
bad if i drive for about 30 mins on the freeway but then stops when i
get into town, and sometimes is non-existant when i start the car.

hopefully this is enough information.

thanks
Nick

What is the psi on the oil pressure?

Answer
Change the oil and filter first (if you havent already).
This is the quickest fix for a possible low oil pressure problem. The pressure should be at 30 to 40 psi.
There is a bypass (sometimes) built into the oil pump which will allow oil to flow should part of the oil pump go bad.
Unfortunately, it sounds like you will have to replace the oil pump. But before you do, rent a oil pressure tester from Autozone and physically check the pressure at the oil sending unit.
