Chevrolet Repair: Noise above my head...., chev, lt

Question
I have a 2001 Chev. Suburban LT.
Right above the driver's head on the left side, is a small fan (I think it's a fan) I don't know what its for but, it's making a noise that is getting louder and louder each day. When I turn off the engine, you can hear the fan winding down till it stops.
Could you please tell me how, if possible, to fix this or replace this.
