Chevrolet Repair: 1988 Chevy S10 2.5 liter timing gear replacement, chevy s10, cam shaft

Question
I am pretty sure my engine jumped time.  TDC shows the rotor at the firing point for #2, 1-3-4-2 firing order.

My question is do I really have to remove the camshaft to get the timing gear off.  I do not want to damage the camshaft, and have no idea what an arbor press is.  And I really need to get this back on the road.

It has been running rough lately, backfires, no power, excessive gas usage.

Could it be the distributor is out.  Haven't touched it, other than to remove the distributor cap.

No strange engine noises.  About halfway home it backfired twice, real loud, ran like junk for about 20 miles, then couldn't make it up an incline.  Got it home, did nothing but replace plugs, wires, #2 was burnt into 2 pieces, rotor, distributor cap, it ran sorta, made it up a steeper incline, got me about 10 miles to work, wouldn't start at break, started fine at lunch, wouldn't start at all at the end of the day.
Oh ya, manual transmission 5 speed.  If that matters.

I'm on here as an expert in the electrical section and know the value of information.  Appreciate your help and knowledge. Thanks Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,
An arbor press is one of those things with a hydraulic cylinder, that you use some blocks to hold a gear from moving, and use the cylinder, and a spacer, to press the gear off the shaft.
That would require removing the cam shaft, but I really don't think that is necessary. Usually just a retaining bolt holds the gear on, and a key aligns it with the camshaft.
