I had it sitting for a few months (muffler had rotted )I had the alternator & batt. checked they came out fine - I replaced the starter & fuel filter.. It will start for a few sec. then die - if I keep my foot on the pedal I can keep it running for about 5 min then the engine light will come on and die
Answer -
When the CHECK ENGINE light illuminates, What CODE(S) are being stored in the computer ?.
*****I can't figure that out (Codes)  what I did notice is that the exhaust-manifold turns bright red? and the car will only stay started if I keep my foot on gas pedal?

Answer
Do NOT continue to run this vehicle as you will mELT the catalytic converters internal components and thus cause an exhaust restriction.

You will HAVE to find a book that shows you how to extract the CODES from the computer and in the book the code #'s will identify a possible PART fault.

Usually when the exhaust-manifold turns bright red this is a sign of a computer failure.

BUT, You have to find out WHAT caused the computer to fail BEFORE you install a new one.

If you have an engine component failure that is causing the computer to fail and you ONLY install a NEW computer you will DESTROY the nEW computer.

Getting these CODES is VITAL.
