Chrysler Repair: Manual transmition problem, shifter move, shift mechanism

On my Pt cruiser 2001 manual 5 speed, the gears or shifter if it's known as, has stopped working.
The gear the vehicle is in currently is reverse, but the gear stick is only moving forward and backward, but not selecting any gears at all.
Please can you advise what it could be?

One of three things may have happened. Something may physically be blocking the shift mechanism inside the car, a shift cable may be frozen or there is a problem in the transmission. I would check the cables first by disconnecting them from the transmission and then trying to move the shifter. If the shifter move easily the first two concerns are eliminated leaving only an internal transmission problem. To gain access to the cables you'll need to remove the airbox. Disconnect the cables and let me know how you made out.
