Chrysler Repair: 2.7 timing chain problems, valve damage, 2001 dodge stratus

Question
I have a 2001 dodge stratus with a 2.7 l. engine. my chain tensioner failed and the chain became excessively loose. the engine was cranked over a number of times without being able to start it made very loud rattling noises. is there possibility of valve damage to the engine.  while the engine was being cranked over the right side camshaft was not turning.   thank you.

Answer
Hi Jerry,
Yes, there is a possibility of valve damage, unfortunately because this engine requires that the valves be out of the way when the pistons reach the top of their stroke. One way to check would be to correct the issue with the tensioner and then do a compression test. If that passes then you are ok, otherwise the side which was turned will need to be opened up.
