Chrysler Repair: 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cruise Control, dodge ram 2500, cruise control system

Question
Hello,

I have a 2002 dodge ram 2500 5.9L Gas. When the cruise control is set, my TCC disengages then re-engages every mile or so. The RPM gauge will jump about 200 rpm and the shutter of the torque converter engaging can be felt.
The TCC operates normal without the cruise set?
So, my question is, is there something in the cruise control system that could cause the TCC to act erratic when the speed is set.

Answer
Hi Scott,
The pcm will unlock the converter when either it senses the vehicle load increases (as when starting to go up a grade) or the throttle pressure increases (which may be generated by the cruise controller as when it increases the throttle opening for example to maintain speed setting). So there is a basis for the tcc to be going 'off' that is related to the throttle sensing system. Unfortunately without a good deal of reading through the transmission section of the ram manual in the hopes of identifying exactly whether what you are observing is normal or not and if not what to do about it, I didn't find a simple answer as to what to do about this. But perhaps you can inquire at a trans shop or a dealer to see what there 'take' is on it. Something is overly sensitive to the sort of change that can evidentally result in unlocking the tcc. If you don't find any help let me know and I can start searching through the manual again.
Do you notice that the tcc will unlock when you step on the gas when not in cruise?
