Chrysler Repair: 97 Sebring coupe: turn signal blinker problem., turn signal switch, electrical continuity

Question
My left blinker is stuck on. The lever moves up and down and that is not stuck. The relay deal behind the stereo is not the problem. Is it in the steering column? if so, is there a way to fix it without having to reaplace the thing??

Answer
Hi Nicole,
The circuit is quite simple: there is a green/blue wire on pin 7 of the plug at the flasher relay behind the stereo. That wire goes to the turn signal switch on the steering column where it comes in on pin 7 of that switch. The switch connects that wire to a green/yellow wire on pin 8 of the plug which is a ground wire. When the turn signal is in neutral there should be no connection between 7 and 8, and when you select the left turn those two pins should be connected together.
I would suspect that the switch contacts are touching when they shouldn't be. If that is the case then you need to replace the turn signal switch or try to open it up and repair the contact problem. It is possible that the green/blue wire is shorted to ground along the path from the relay to the turn signal switch OR along an identical parallel path from the relay to the hazard flasher switch. That parallel branch goes to the hazard flasher switch and it could be shorted to ground along that path, or finally a similar switch in the hazard flasher between pins 1 and 4 of that unit could be failed just like I described for the turn signal switch. The wire colors I mentioned are identical there.
You would want to check the electrical continuity between pin 7 and 8 of the turn signal switch to begin the diagnosis. The plug is on the back side of the switch (faces the instrument cluster). If you find the pins shorted together when the switch is in neutral (and the plug is removed) then that would prove that the switch is the problem. If not, then you would find the wires coming in on the plug side are shorted together so then look for a short in the green/blue wire or a failed contact in the hazard switch is the problem. But I suspect the turn signal switch.
