Chrysler Repair: 1998 Concorde: blower motor, speed choices, diagnostic function

Question
In your previous answer, you suggested I may need to replace the resistor block.  Are the resistor block and the blow control module the same item?  Many thanks for all your answers.
I could not find a place to rate your helpful, quick response to my previous question.
Thank you much,
Hulan

Answer
Hi Hulan,
The name of the multi-speed component for the blower is different, depending upon the type of control panel your vehicle has. If it is conventional in design then it is called the resistor block and you have 4 speeds to choose from. If is digital and you select the temperature you desire than that one uses the control module and it gives you about 14 speed choices. In either case it is located in the air duct near the blower motor. If you have the conventional unit and the blower doesn't operate at all then I would not believe it is the resistor block because on high speed only function you are basically by-passing the resistor block. But if you have the automatic temperature digital control type I can imagine that the module may totally fail though I don't have the wiring diagram to be certain of that. So let me know which unit you have because if you have the ATC type it does have a self-diagnostic function you can avail yourself of which may diagnose the problem for you. But if you have the conventional type I would suspect the blower is gone unless it is the fuse of the switch. I assumed you had the conventional type and that is why I suggested that you jump the wires to the blower directly to see if it is or is not working, and if it is then to check the switch. It is very unlikely that a total 'no blower' situation with the conventional unit is only the resistor block but rather it is the resistor block PLUS either the blower motor or the switch given that you has a history of high speed only operation which is most likely the resistor block being blown. Did you check the fuse #23, did you try to test the motor?

PS: Look carefully at the answer where you should find a place to rate me on knowledge, clarity, timeliness, and politeness (from 10 down to 1), and then it asks about nomination of me to be 'expert of the month' with a default position of "no", which I would appreciate your changing to 'yes'. You can go back to the earlier answer and also rate that one the same way since each answer can be rated. Thanks for doing that so much!
