Chrysler Repair: heater mode (air distribution) doesnt change, plymouth breeze, fuse box

Question
1996 Plymouth breeze defroster works great but when I move switch to heat position it stays on defroster. Can you help or suggest a fix.

Answer
Hi Jack,
I presume that air distribution pattern is not changing as you request, correct? Otherwise if it is temperature of the air issue that is a different problem.
The doors that control the air movement are located on the left side of the unit that is under the dash. If you remove the silencer/pad from the lower edge of the dash on the driver side you can get a look at the motor which drives several doors called the mode door motor, located on the upper surface of that left side. It has an electrical connector and screws which once removed allow the motor to be removed. Notice the alignment of the motor to the door gearing as a replacement motor will need to be similarly aligned when installed. Before you remove anything, though, try running the engine and the heater system and try changing the mode of distribution setting to see if the motor is working at all. If not, then check the pink/dark blue wire on the plug for the motor to verify that it shows 5 volts compared to ground (any shiny metal body structure nearby). That is the 'power' to move the motor and it comes from the body computer. The other wires control the doors to move back and forth and also sense the movement of the doors. If the supply voltage is present and the doors don't move then I would believe that the motor is not working or the mechanism is jammed. The 5v supply comes from the body computer so if that were missing I would check the fuses for the body computer; and the supply that lights the rear defogger switch for the heater/ac is fuse 6 in the fuse box behind the dash, and it also powers the system that tells what mode you want to use. So if the rear defog switch light is on then fuse 6 is OK.
Let me know what you find out.
