Chrysler Repair: Odometer - New Yorker 91, speedometer repair, mechanical cable

Question
Hi, the odometer on my kids NY'er 91 has stopped working, the speedometer works fine, the display is a typical analogue one.

Where do i start? I am assuming the same cable runs to the gear box for the speed and miles?

Thank you

Mark

Answer
Hi Mark,
The odometer and the speedometer are both driven electrically by a single gear on the transmission extension, that is the box out of which the half-shafts extend. The gear pulses electrically so it doesn't need a mechanical cable just a couple of wires.  Because the speedo works, the electrical signal from the sensor to the cluster is present and the problem with the odometer then is purely mechanical and within the cluster proper. If you remove the cluster I believe that you will find a couple of gears between the mechanism for the speedo and the odo (20- and 25- tooth# and one or both of those needs to be replaced. If you go to website: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/thechryslerlebaronclub/messages  and search for message #33980 you will find instructions on installing the gears. You can get the gear#s# at a speedometer repair shop, though because of cost #about $20 each) you may want to open it up first to find out which gear you need.

PS: I can give you the 8-step procedure for removing the cluster if you want to do it yourself.
