Chrysler Repair: 02 PT turn signals/hazards, work signals, wire colors

Question
'02 PT cruiser limited.  Multiswitch was replaced (fog lights wern't working) now hazard & signals not working. Flasher replaced next. Signals worked prior to multiswitch replacement. I even reinstalled old multiswitch: signals & hazards still not working. Turn lights both front & rear do not come on at all with turn indicator depressed-ignition on. Under dash 20amp Fuse-slot# 15(combination wiper/flasher) is good and wipers work.  Could wire in harness that plugs into multifunction switch need attention and pins/wire colors work signals/hazard lights? Thanks in advance Larry

Answer
Hi Larry,
There are two fuses in the turn/hazard system: the #15 that you checked and the #19 in power distribution box that is in the engine compartment. Those should provide voltage on pins 3 and 11 of the switch's 20-pin plug. The 3 should show when the ignition is in the run position, the 11 should show 12v all the time. Let me know if that isn't the problem and we can try checking some of the internal switching function of the multi-function switch. Check the fuses carefully to see if they might have subtle crack in the wire, or check for continuity.

Roland Followup question: The fuse in PDB # 19 was blown. I replaced fuse(15amp) which continues to blow 2 times... fuse #15(20amp) inside panel remains ok... ignition key remained off. What & How to check next? Thanks very much, Larry

Hi Larry,
It appears that the fuse is shorted to ground. It has a pink/dark green wire that goes to a 26-pin gray (or white) bulkhead disconnect on the left side of the engine compartment on pin 6, and from there on the cabin side at pin 6 it goes on a pink/dark blue wire to pin 11 of the multi-function switch where it connects to one of the five pins of the combo flasher socket (sorry I can't id which one but you can find it with the ohmmeter.
I would pull out the combination flasher and measure resistance from the 'cold' side of that fuse socket to ground and see if it still shows a short circuit. If so, then the wire is shorted somewhere between the fuse and multifunction switch's plug. If not, then the flasher is shorted, or the output of the flasher is shorted inside either the hazard switch or the turn signal switch (I would suspect the hazard). Since you replaced the switch and the flasher, my bet is that it is the wire from the fuse to the plug that is shorted. But let me know what you find.

PS Of course if when you put in the fuse you had the emergency flasher or turn signal activated, and one of the bulbs in this system were shorted to ground, that too would cause the fuse to blow promptly, I suspect.
