Chrysler Repair: A/C problems on 1996 LHS, air button, panel button

Question
When i press the recycle air button on the heat/cool controls, the light on the button flashes 3 times then goes out. it never turns on. i am also having issues with vapor/smoke/steam coming from the vents intermittently while the a/c is on too.
Whats going on?

Answer
Hi Wayne,
I am not certain why the button flashes 3 times. The vapor/smoke/steam may actually be leakage from refrigerant leaking from the evaporator coils inside the cabin unit. Has the A/C compressor stopped working, which it will do if you loose the refrigerant? Is there a build-up of film on the windshield, which is a sign of such a leak?
Try doing a self-diagnostic readout for what the unit notices to be wrong:
Set the temp to 75>sno setting, while the engine is running but the car not moving.
Then simultaneously press the floor, mix, and defrost buttons, and notice the blinking that occurs. When that blinking begins release all three buttons and await for the reading on the screen to change to show any 2-digit numbers. If you get a number then press the panel button for the presence of additional codes. The unit will return to normal if there are no numbers and when there are no more numbers to be read out.
Let me know the results of the readout.
