Chrysler Repair: 98 2.7L: engine cyclicaly cuts out. code 0340, camshaft sensor, cam sprockets

Question
The engine rythmicaly cut out as it hit 2700-2800 rpm.  Runs very smooth below that.  Show 0340 code.  Any ideas

Answer
Hi Ralph,
That code is about the signal from the camshaft sensor being absent at the computer. Typically it will cause a stall/no start with recovery after the engine cools down but it certainly too can cause a miss like you describe so I would replace that sensor and see if the problem is solved. The sensor is mounted on the timing case cover at the front of the engine, on the driver's side close to the top of the engine where the cam sprockets are located.
Simply remove the screw that holds it in place, remove it, and disconnect the wiring plug. Just insert a new one with the paper spacer on its tip into the hole, and push it in until it makes contact with the cover and the surface of the sprocket that it 'senses' (hidden inside) and hold there while you tighten the retaining screw to maintain that position (105 inch-pounds of torque). Then attach wiring connector. The wire colors are tan/yellow. black/light blue, and orange for purposes of identification.
