Chrysler Repair: Sebring - radiator drain cock repair, radiator repair shop, sebring conv

Question
The radiator drain cock broke off my 1999 chrysler sebring conv 2.5L eng?  I’m having trouble installing new one – does not go in to get the first ‘pop’ so I can continue twisting clockwise to install.  How do I tell if parts from the first one are still attached (inside) blocking new one? What should I be looking for?

Answer
Hi Kathy,
I can't tell you what to look for because I haven't observed that opening myself. I wonder whether a radiator repair shop might be able to tell you. Also, if you examine the replacement plug and compare it to the broken remains of the original you may be able to determine what part is still there.
I notice one other possible solution: if the outlet pipe into which you insert the plug is round and unmarred, then you should be able to purchase a simple plumbing hardware part called a "pipe plug" whose diameter is such at to insert into the pipe and then when you tighten the wing nut on its end by hand its rubber body expands. That would create a plug which is water tight but removable in the future, just like the fitting you are having trouble with. Simply bring along the replacement plug or measure the diameter of the outlet pipe opening so as to obtain a plug of the proper diameter.
Best of luck on this repair. Please let me know how it works out.
